"Black Environment"
"Coexistence"
Upon first view of Magdalena Abakanowicz's work, I am reminded of my first trip to Poland where I visited the Warsaw Ghetto. I did not know that she was on the outskirts of Warsaw as a child when the Nazis invaded Poland, but whatever she experienced reflects consistently in her work. The textures and roughness of her figures give an eerie quality, that is complimented by their stillness and specific placement. The sculptures represent a definition of the title, but does not demand the viewer make any judgment of what she might mean by a "Black Environment" or "Coexistence;" instead the viewer is becomes part of these ideas because due to Abakanowicz use of scale.
